Thought I'd try something a little bit different for todays post, no particular theme, just an outfit style I thought I'd put together. Something that I kinda feel like wearing today while running around working.

I'm loving round neck sweatshirts at the moment, with a collared shirt and short skirt and some unique accessories. In Auckland right now we're having some fickle weather. I've found it's best to layer, always take your sunglasses and a brolly. Top knot for the humidity and wind, a bit of colour with a rose lippie and a beautiful leather satchel for all the worky stuff.

Weekend Tunes: Wild Bill Ricketts

Eery weekday I listen to Charlotte on her Morning Glory show while I work, I get a lot accomplished in those 3 hours! I think I can attribute that to the excellent music she plays! I heard a beautiful track from Wild Bill Ricketts and just had to investigate further. Do you recognise the vocals on this track? It's Mara TK from Electric Wire Hustle, someone needs to bottle that man up — such amazing talent.

One of the defining moment in my 'grown up' life was when I bought my first table and chairs. No longer was I destined to eat all my meals on my lap from the couch like I did when I was flatting. No, no. I was now able to eat from a table, at a chair, specifically designed for this purpose. A whole new world had opened up; I could have people over for dinner, brunch, afternoon tea and well, any other meal.

The table I purchased was ridiculously large. It was a 1.5m x 1.5m table that would seat EIGHT people. I quickly discovered that this was unlikely to ever happen and it was more of a nuisance than anything else. I listed it on an auction site and it was gone a few days after, but replaced with my current set that I still love.

I love dark wood combined with beech and accents of chrome. I find the dark wood combined with modern, clean lines really lovely. You can accent your table easily with interesting chairs; and of course, nothing every has to match.

Weekend Tunes: Pen Pals

This weekend I thought I'd post about something a little different! My good bud Alana, from Fancy! Design Blog and I have quite similar music tastes in that, they are both excellent (if I do say so myself) we're both quite partial to hip-hop i.e. it features as a good 80% of what we listen to and when we were having a good Skype catch up a few months ago decided we should send each other mix cd's. Take it back to 98.

I used to love making mix cd's. In the olden days, before everyone had iPods and MP3 players, we only had cd players in our cars (or tape players with these annoying tape like things you'd put in then connect to your discman) and had to either buy our music from a physical shop or burn a new disc, running the risk it would crap out right at the end and you'd have to start all over again. This would happen to me a lot. Before that it was tapes, and that was just a lot of stopping, starting and using a pencil to fix things.

The trick with making an excellent mix for a friend is not only track selection, but order too. It has to flow, compliment the track played before and not stick out like a sore thumb. Don't just bung it on there in alphabetical order, put some time and thought into it. Clearly, I take this too seriously.

I'm so into Maxi skirts at the moment (along with everyone else it seems! Go on, join the bandwagon) this Summer I have bought at least 3 to wear; perfect for hot days and cool evenings spent outside. I love them paired with a simple over sized singlet or tee, tucked in with simple canvas flats. Totally makes you feel like you're still on holiday.... Alternatively, combine with a body suit and heels for a sophisticated evening look. The humble Maxi skirt, who knew it was so versatile?

Combine the long look with a pleated skirt to swish and sashay yourself everywhere you go, wear one and walk down some stairs — just try not to feel like a princess making an entrance.

As you know, Foxes HQ is based within my humble home. I get asked a lot how I manage to cram so much into the day; mainly, it's being really, really dedicated to something and actually enjoying so it doesn't feel like work! The other thing I cannot stress enough about working for yourself, from home or anywhere really is BE ORGANISED! Write stuff down, write lists, thousands of them if you have to. I like working from home as it's quite comfortable, I've got Leo the cat and Ollie dog to keep me company and when my little girl is home, I can hang and work with her at the same time. Bliss!

So, here are my top ten things for getting your sh!t done:

Keep a written diary; writing it down cements things in your brain
Write to-do lists and update them, everything goes on there even things you do every day
Do schedule dedicated time to work on certain projects if you have multiple stuff on the go
Keep a notepad with you AT ALL TIMES to jot down ideas or things you remember
Always carry your business cards. Not really helpful for getting things done, but you never know who you could bump into
Keep your work area tidy; it's amazing what a clear workspace can do for you mentally
Always carry a pen, that works
Write drafts when you can; nobody wants to get that email at 10.30pm but draft it at least and send it in the morning
Keep your music up to date; when you listen to good tunes as you work time will fly by!
It's ok to say no to people sometimes. Look after yourself.

Weekend Tunes: CSS

This is an awesome track! I think it's just because it reminds me of a rather young me. With pink hair and various other rebellious teenage goings on... No, I don't think I need to post photo's of that. I don't know much about CSS, I heard them on the radio the other day and just had to write it down to share.

This track is called City Grrrl (beware sensitive ears, it's got swearing) and doesn't really kick in for a few minutes. I love her bike and ghetto blaster.

Jessica's Style: Out Of The Blue

I love this colour, I really love blue but there is something about this that I just can't get enough of. Maybe it's because it feels like a simple colour; not too fancy, not too regal or baby like, just a true blue. I think it's best paired with black, a pop of colour without being too bright and out there. Fresh for Summer too!

If you look you can't find this all over the place: wear it as an accessory, a pair of shoes, a cuff or if you're feeling brave a pair of skinny jeans.

First Jessica's Style post of 2012! I hope you've been enjoying these posts, they've really been fun to write and put together.

I love most aspects of Summer, I do however not like having a full fringe (bangs) in Summer as you often end up with a stringy, oily mess hanging in front of your face. New Zealand is just so hot!

My Fringe Tip: if you have a fringe, as soon as you wash and dry your hair, sprinkle it with some talc powder and brush out with a bristle brush. This absorbs the oil before it's there on your lovely locks. If you're like me and do a alternate day hair washing schedule, sprinkle some more through on that second day.

I've learnt to embrace my naturally, wavy hair. I no longer fight it by tying it up all the time or attempting to straighten it all the time if I want to go out, which really, it's just too hot to be bothering with all that sometimes. I used to hate it as it wasn't curly enough to be curly-curly and not straight enough to be silky straight.

Lots of people have commented on my hair usually via Instagram (follow me if you fancy, @foxesshop) and I thought I'd share how I do it. Sorry it's not a massive trick or secret! If you have hair like me, here is how I get my hair to look like this.

Choose a shampoo that is light and makes your hair healthy. I actually use Head & Shoulders! Not because I had dandruff, but because it's really gentle and a healthy scalp, means healthy hair (my hairdresser would be so proud).
Invest in a quality conditioner, I love the Sebastian range (it smells yummy too) and I get it from my local hairdressers.
When you get out of the shower, just bung your hair into a towel. This helps cut your drying time with the hairdryer.
Brush your hair with a wide tooth comb to get rid of any knots, dry and blow dry your fringe FIRST. If it dry's funny, it's a losing battle trying to fix it.
Tousle dry the rest of your hair; lift the roots as you dry with your fingers and half dry the rest of your hair with the dryer pointing down and just scrunch your hair and move it so it's nearly dry. Leave the ends damp-ish.
When you're done, use a pea sized amount of a finishing creme. I use Wella System Professional Polishing Creme and it's lasted me for years. A little really does go a long way.
Put the polishing creme first through the ends of your hair, smooth it over your head and put a fraction on your fringe (if you have one). Curl your hair around your fingers and 'fix' it how you want it to look and let it dry the rest of the way naturally.

If you have a natural wave in your hair, this way of drying it (keeping it half damp) will bring it out and the finishing products stop you from looking like a frizzy mess. If you don't have much of a wave, try this and see how much you can get naturally, then put some more body into your hair by using a curling wand on large sections.

Embrace your locks! And wear a hat, sunburnt scalps are OUCH.

I wasn't going to do a blog post, but after waking up on my very good friends couch this morning at 7.30am to happy kids running about the house, I had a few thoughts I wanted to get down. 2011 has been a really full on year, professionally it has been amazing, but personally, it's really been a ride with lots of extreme highs and lows; and not always a fun one. From chatting to friends of mine in the last few weeks, everyone I know has had their lives touched by their own version of tragedy or a loss in some way — and you know what, I think that sucks. The tragedies in Christchurch and Japan of course were huge, but I wanted to take a minute for a little bit of a personal reflection on 2011 and what it meant to me.

January 2011 began with me attending the funeral of my (then) partners Grandmother, it was a really horrible time for him as he was very close to his Gran, right from a young age. Three months following, I decided to end our long term relationship for 'the greater good' after coming second to his addictions for too long; which never leaves anyone feeling very good about it. It not only took a long time for me to adjust, but for my little girl as well. A few weeks later, my own Poppa who had been very sick, passed away. My little brother was unable to fly back from the UK to attend the funeral and I read a letter from him on his behalf in front of a Church packed with close friends and family of my Poppa. Having (luckily) not attended any funerals before, it was not an ideal way to start the day. We've had to move house — twice, which is not only stressful but moving a business as well is time consuming and expensive!

The year has been tainted by the occasional person getting a bee in their bonnet about nothing in-particular and thinking that they have the right to publicly complain about something that they think I might have done. Which really, only shows their own immaturity and lack of self control and has no reflection on me. But hey, that's something new I've learnt this year!

But for everything that I felt was really unfair and actually, taking the piss, there has been a lot of great and wonderful things to come from 2011. I have met and befriended some amazing, talented and truly genuine people who now, I have no idea how I could ever not have them in my life! Alana from Fancy! Design Blog, Janine from Janine and The Mixtape, Sophie from That Vintage, Dane from Tornadoes & Tigers, Amanda from Here Comes The Sun, Ilana from See Me Everywhere, Zoe from Pretty Zoo to give special mention to a few but really, I am lucky to be blessed with so many inspirational people to have the pleasure of knowing.

2011 also saw the store growing from strength to strength with being featured in Homestyle Magazine, Your Home & Garden, various contributions to Viva and of course all the amazing, supportive blogs that have discovered Foxes and written about me. I've been lucky enough to be a collaboration partner with We Can Create, worked with my friends Cleo, Megan and Lauren on First Thursdays and am now proud to be working with the new Silo Park project, putting together their markets. I've had a wonderful time working with one of my best friends, Kylie co-organising and running the Auckland Art & Craft Fair which has just exploded in popularity and I've had some amazing regular Graphic Design clients to work with too.

We had a new puppy join our family, Ollie and my little girl, Grace has been a happy, healthy, gorgeous mini lady that totally loves and appreciates life.

I wish you all the best in 2012; let go of stupid things that have happened, we can't change the past but we can do our best to ensure 2012 is totally kick ass and amazing. And I am in no way planning to move house again!

Weekend Tunes: Charlotte Gainsbourg

Weekend Tunes: Massive Attack

I have been putting off doing a few posts on massive groups, I try and only do one post about a group and then it takes them off the table. I first fell in love with Massive Attack in 1994 when they released this album (that's 17, SEVENTEEN years ago) and I was 11 or 12 years old at the time, I'd just discovered Portishead and this was equally as cool.

Even after such a long time they still sound so up to date. I believe that's what we call 'timeless'. I saw them live in 1999 at a V festival in the UK, it was really dark and they played on a stage that had loads of woods behind them, it was pretty amazing.

This track is my favourite of theirs, the singer is the same woman that fronts Everything But The Girl. This track is called Better Things. The second video is one I found of them performing Karmacoma at the very concert that I was at in '99.

I first heard these guys a couple of years ago and they've been quite the staple in my music collection since. I love this track, it's got beautiful samples, keys and it just does something totally right for me. They have been releasing albums since 1997, so long enough to know what they're doing.

Hey Mr Postman, A Winner!

Thanks so much to everyone that entered in the Hey Mr Postman competition!! I had so many awesome entries that were all really creative. With lots from other countries like Bangkok, the UK, Ireland and Australia — just amazing!

The winner I chose was sent in by Robin Sparrow Books, they made a small, felt fox with pretty stitched eyelashes and a little heart — but the part that blew me away was a small felt book, complete with stitched words and a little poem/story inside.

"Once upon a time, on a very hot day, Little Miss Foxy was happy at play.
The sun was shining, the sky was blue, so she decided to go to a shop or two.
She hopped on the internet, and she came upon a store; called Foxes! Oh my goodness, crafts galore!
She found a tote in a beautiful blues, a shiny beaded strap, mmmm, now she needed new shoes....

Jessica's Style: Pretty Nails

I'm not really one for wearing nail varnish on my hands, if I do, I usually only really wear nude or very pale colours, like pinks. I'm just not very good at keeping it nice! I chip it so fast. I do however always have a bright colour painted in my toes. In saying that, if I were to have my nails painted, I'd love to try some of these patterns and hopefully they would last longer than a day or two.

Recently, Kylie (who I run the Auckland Fair with) and I went and got manicures and pedicures; it was the first time I'd ever had a pedicure and I was SO ticklish, the ladies looking after us couldn't stop giggling. I will try and not be such a wimp next time!

Weekend Tunes: J Dilla

Wow, where can I start really. J Dilla was an amazing producer, who has worked with anyone worth working with in Hip Hop (Slum Village, Erykah Badu, Pete Rock, Talib Kweli, Common, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Janet Jackson..... you get my point). With a successful music career since the early 1990's he is definitely one of the greats. He was another artist whose life was sadly cut short from a debilitating blood illness and he died in 2006.

His last album Donut Shop was released just before he died. This is by far my favourite track from that album. Stones Throw Records recently held a video competition for the track and this is the winner. The second is an instrumental of one of the most beautiful tracks, So Far To Go.

Auckland Art & Craft Fair

As you may already know, the Auckland Art & Craft Fair is happening again this weekend! Held only twice a year, it's a pretty big deal (if I do say so myself!) and not only because it brings together amazing, talented people but because it's something I run with my friend Kylie, and we really do just do it for the love of it.

There will be over 70 independent designers with their wares on show, tasty frozen treats from Nice Blocks being sold and I'll be there with my Foxes tables, heavy with awesomness. Make sure you say hello to me!

If you have some time, make sure you come along as it's the perfect place to do some Christmas shopping — aside from Foxes, hehe

I nearly thought that I wasn't going to have a Jessica's Style post today! I'm usually really onto it and write them all in one big go, sometimes weeks in advance and schedule them. But alas, I have been busy with a house move (again, yes, I know. Totally not what we expected having just moved in September) and of course, planning the Auckland Fair.

As you may (or may not) know, I'm also a Graphic Designer. I've been working freelance for a few years now which is awesome; my office buddies are my cat and dog, I don't get silly email forwards and I can have as many of the chocolate biscuits as I like. The other awesome part about it is that I get to use all my design smarts on choosing great pieces for the store. I love type. I'm a bit of a type nerd. Many of my own art prints I purchase for my house are type based And this post is an ode to type.

Mr Postman: Update

I've been getting plenty of people asking me when the Mr Postman competition winner will be drawn. As the mail at this time of year is very slow, I'm still having entries come in that were post dated by the 25th of November. With it being open internationally, there could be entries that take a week or so to arrive so I'm waiting until later in the week to draw a winner, which I think is only fair.

I was recently at a bit of a block for what to blog about for Weekend Tunes, so what did I do? I asked what people were listening to on twitter! Of course! @EntertainMe_NZ reminded me of Onra, and I'm kicking myself and how could I forget! I'd seen him play in Auckland at a previous Tiger Translate gig and holy-hell, is he clever. His style is really cool, the type of instrumental hip-hop that I really like, you may have heard this track before which he is very well known for. Similar to DJ Krush in a way; interesting enough to be on it's own, no lyrics, no covering up of the music. I like it.

Jessica's Style: Let There Be Light!

I love soft lighting, I would rather have 3 or 4 lamps on than harsh overhead lighting. I find it softer on my eyes and it lets you get creative with what you choose to highlight in your home. Not to mention, so many cool lamps are available and it's often an inexpensive way to add design focus without spending too much money (and you can totally justify it as it's a practical item). If you don't want to buy new shades to hanging lights, get some interesting looking lightbulbs. I love the look of commercial signage in a residential setting, shame it's so hard to come by!

Weekend Tunes: Dubwize

Following on a little from last weeks post (with Peter Tosh) I wanted to choose Dubwize for a Weekend Tunes slot. Really, I think the sunshine is getting to me and all I want to do is sit around reading books, drinking tea and listening to music....

Dubwise are great, I actually had the pleasure of spending a few days with them when they were in Auckland releasing their Dubwize meets Confucius EP back in the early 2000's. My faltmate at the time, John, was good friends with them and was hosting their album release party at the Gelatos Basement so they stayed at our flat for a few days.

This track is called Dancehall State Of Mind, it's a remix but it's still awesome. Now, go find a good book and just sit around for a bit.

Jessica's Style: Peter Pan

There is something that I just love about a Peter Pan collar, the way that it makes something look to pretty, so finished, so proper. It's a style that I reckon nearly anyone can wear, you can make it less child-like by adding different fabrics such as leather, have a collar that is lace or something that is made from neutral tones rather than a floral.

With Summer fast approaching, I'm thinking about music I like to have playing when friends are over for a barbecue, reading a book outside in the sun and generally sit around to. I love dub and reggae and Peter Tosh is really one of my favourites, right up there with Horace Andy and Barrington Levy in my books anyway. Peter Tosh was originally from Jamaica and was a member of The Wailers, he unfortunately died in the late 80's but like many great artists, his sound is still just as fresh and current today.

I love totes! I have a ba-jillion (that's totally a real number) of them and often use them as an every day bag. I think what I love most about them is that they often don't cost a lot, most often have a cool illustration and you can wash them! With the amount of trips I make to the post office, you need a sturdy bag to carry all your Foxes packages in.

Totes are a great gift that you really can't go wrong with too.

Weekend Tunes: Cocaine 80's & Common

It's no surprise that I like Common and when I heard this tune by Cocaine 80's that he featured on, I just had to share it. Common reminds me of a time in my life around 2000/2001 when I was pretty fancy-free, I was living in a great flat in Pt Chev with really inspiring musician types and I was really getting into my Hip Hop a lot more and learning a lot. Common is a great lyricist and I like a lot of what he has to say. From Chicago, he's been making music since the early 90's and the first album that made me notice him was Like Water For Chocolate with stand out tracks (to me) like Dooinit, Ghetto Heaven Part II and The Light.

Anyway, I really like the dude and this track, Six Feet Over, I heard the other day via twitter buddy @electricpuppet is awesome. Enjoy!

Little Lotus Project

Two wonderful friends of mine, Cleo Barnet and Meghan Geliza are both fundraising to embark on the Little Lotus Project. Cleo is submerged in the creative scene in Auckland and organises First Thursdays (which Foxes is a part of) and Auckland Art Week and Meghan is an amazingly talented artist, often showcasing her work in galleries around Auckland.

The Little Lotus Project endeavours to send 12 New Zealand artists to Thailand "The SpinningTop 'Little Lotus Project' is a collaborative art project, linking twelve international artists with refugee and migrant children on the Thai/Burma border. Through a variety of art workshops the children experience the joys of creativity while also being part of a huge multi-media project which brings exposure to the children's cause. Access to education and art supplies is a luxury for these children and all funds raised from Little Lotus will go towards their ongoing welfare and education" You can read more about the project here.

Jessica's Style: Make a Spectacle

For the last year I've been getting horrid headaches and generally can't see much more than a couple of meters away, I do wear specs, but the last time I had my eyes checked was in 2004 (I know, so bad, never again I promise) and my current glasses were pretty much useless and because I hated the frames, I just wouldn't wear them. So along I trotted to my local optician, had my eyes checked and (surprise, surprise) found out I needed a new prescription for wearing all the time, not just when I felt like it.

On a sidenote, there is an awesome article about people that wear glasses that don't actually need them in issue 43 of Frankie Mag. Major pet peeve of mine.

Anyway, so began the mission to find suitable frames for the type of prescription that I needed that also, wouldn't leave me totally draining my bank account. While I was looking, here are some of the styles I was turning to for inspiration.

I ended up choosing the pair I did, not only because I totally went all smitten when I first saw them, but because when I had them on walking around the store; when I caught my reflection in the mirror, the first thing I didn't see was G L A S S E S, I saw me. I thought that was quite an achievement. I've had them for a few days now and I LOVE being able to see, I did not know what I was missing out on until I could see it. It's amazing and I never want to take them off!

I LOVE Jurassic 5, since, like, forever. I saw them perform live at Big Day Out once and it was amazing! Turntablism at it's finest. My favourite album is Quality Control but I've also rediscovered Power In Numbers again too, so many gems! This album has been on in my car for the last few weeks, it only reminds me of good times and nice people. The beats are smooth and the lyrics are clever and conscious; you wouldn't expect anything less, really.

This track is called If You Only Knew and the second, Hey. I love them both and couldn't decide.

Halloween, I feel a little indifferent about. I didn't grow up in the States where it's so big and celebrated with such a lot of fuss. As a kid, it wasn't something we did until we were about 12 and even then it wasn't that much to get excited about. In saying that, it's fun to dress up and it makes for a mighty excellent style-post theme! I love black (which is why I was able to find so many pins!), and I wear a lot of it, it's classic and you always look best in what you feel comfortable in.

Weekend Tunes: Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

I've always wanted to play trumpet but never really got the chance to give it a crack. One day! Anyway, this group, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble sure know how to play their instruments, this track is a cover of Outkast 'Spottie-Ottie-Dopalicious' which is a favourite of mine to begin with and they've done a frikkin awesome job of it. Based in Chicago, US, they are a 9 piece group of (mighty fine looking) men, they have played with some awesome artists including Erykah Badu, Mos Def and Blur. Best listened to on a sunny day, from a comfortable spot with some kind of cold beverage at hand.

I love snail mail. I am an excellent letter writer and there is nothing more that I like than sitting down and writing something, by hand, to someone I know. When my best friend, Anna, moved from Auckland to Wellington when we were about 8 years old, we kept in touch by writing loads of letters. Each one we would decorate the envelopes, put stickers on the paper, do little illustrations, include friendship bracelets or pressed flowers and just natter on about what we were doing. There was no such thing as emails, flights were crazy expensive back then (think at least $600 for a return trip) and toll calls were also really expensive. But letters, we could write letters and a stamp back then only cost about 30c. Our parents didn't keep in touch for us, we did it on our own and we are still friends to this day which is about 20 years later! Letters, can change lives — or at least keep them together.

I was recently inspired by the Meet Me At Mikes competition that Pip ran (go Pip!) and decided to do one for Foxes too!

What you do:
Write me a letter! Or a postcard, you can decorate it as you like. The catch? Your letter must include something that you have made about a Fox; you can draw one, write a poem, write a song, take a photo of one, sew one, crochet one, knit one — get creative. Whoever sends in my favourite, will win the letter writing prize and some of my favourite Foxy things that are sent in. Exciting!

I do not own a working watch. When they run out of battery, I usually just stop wearing them, feel really naked for a few weeks then don't get the battery replaced for a year or so or buy another watch. It's TERRIBLY wasteful. But, most of the watches I've owned in the past have not been overly expensive. So, currently watchless, I am on the hunt for a new one to adorn my (child like) wrist.

It's a tough road finding the perfect watch. I mainly wear silver but I love the idea of a rose gold watch, a big part of me really just wants a Casio digital watch that has a calculator on it too (how cool would that be!) but I feel it could possibly be too childish. Like I said, I have scarily small wrists and everything either looks too massive on me or it just plain falls off.

I totally feel like I am the last person to discover Foals. Accidentally bumped into them while looking for something totally different on You Tube, as you do. One of those accidental meetings that blossom into something beautiful. They are from Oxford in the UK, which i a beautiful part of the country (makes me miss living in the UK!) have been playing together for a few years and really came onto the scene with the release of their debut album in 2008. This track, Spanish Sahara is from their 2010 album Total Life Forever. I like it. It's a little slow on the uptake but once you get into the song, it's superb.

I love succulents. They are tiny, compact, easy to care for and grow in just about anything. They are (nearly) fool proof. I'm not the best gardener, I'm sure it's a family shame; my Grand Mother on Mums side is an amazing gardener that can grow gorgeous flowers and vegetables and my Grand Father on my Dads side was a professional gardener on a huge estate in England, he looked after acres of manicured gardens. Me? Things tend to 'hibernate' and I am left with lots of pots with just dirt in them. Which is why I like succulents! They add greenery and if you do forget to water them, they won't hold it against you.

Every home needs plants inside. Otherwise, it just feels weird. Grab some next time you're at the garden centre, grow them in old jars, tea cups or tins or maybe splash out and get some really awesome pots. Here are some of my favourites.

I'm so loving all the nude colours and hues at the moment, I don't know if they are that in style, but I seem to be seeing them everywhere! I think though it's more like when you really love something, you spot it at 100 paces....

Slapping a design on a sweatshirt is not an original concept, in any way but what makes these items of delicious comfort and familiarity unique and awesome, is what you have on it to make it special. I love sweatshirts, not sure why I like grey ones so, so much. It may have something to do with having a Rainbow Brite grey sweatshirt when I was about 6, I wore it until it fell apart, but I really do love them.

When I am in Foxes HQ all day, I'm usually wearing jeans, a tee, cardigan or sweatshirt and flats. It's like a uniform. So when it comes to finding the *perfect* grey sweatshirt, not just any old thing will do.... here are a few of my favourites.

Another beautiful, talented artist from New Zealand. Tiny Ruins has just sort of popped up everywhere, and good reason too — she has a beautiful voice, soft like velvet and has a very likeable quality. Perfect for Sunday mornings in bed with a cup of tea and an animal friend to keep you company. This is by far my favourite song, it's called 'You've Got The Kind Of Nerve I Like' something I'd like to sing to someone, one day.

Shipping Changes

As the store grows and changes, we make little updates about the place. Some things you will notice (like the new website!) and other things are little (like our new postcard designs). One change that we think is pretty big, and exciting, is our shipping and the way that things are sent to you.

As a store that acts like an art gallery to Designers, some items are sent direct to you from their studios to your door. When you guys order more than one thing at a time (which you really like to do) it can be confusing having lots of little packages arrive. As exciting as the post is, sometimes, you really just want it all arrive at once. Most of the items in the store are sent direct from Foxes, but there is still a small amount that comes direct.

In the coming weeks, everything that your hungry eyes see in the store, will be sent direct to you from Foxes HQ. No more multiple packages, no more worrying where the other part of your order is. Just one, giant package, all for you to rip into straight away.

As part of the ongoing improvement, all New Zealand orders will be sent using Track & Trace courier as standard. The standard, flat rate shipping option will be gone, and will be replaced with Flat Rate Courier. There will be an increase in shipping cost, but we think this is a much better option as items will arrive faster and safer than sending standard mail and it will always be flat rate — so remains the same no matter how much you order.

Little Things (orders under 100g) will no longer be available, everything will be sent under the Courier Flat Rate option.

International customers, business as usual for you guys, but we are looking at a flat rate option and adding some International Courier options also.

With being an on-line store, shipping is a pretty crucial part of the operation and it's important that it runs smoothly and you have confidence in us. Luckily, so far, we haven't had many issues and we're hoping that by making everything even more safe and secure, you can have even more confidence in ordering from Foxes.

New Designer: ICWAT

I've been on the look out for a while now, for a designer that makes awesome tees — for guys and girls. Enter, ICWAT! An acronym for It Comes With A Toy, like all good things should really. Joe, the smart kid behind the label is also a design for that other shop, Mr Vintage, so you know it's going to be good. I like that he mixes strong, graphic design with type and illustrative styles. Quite the package.

Jessica's Style: Bags That!

I love bags, a little too much. Recently, when we moved house I have a whole box full of handbags away to the local charity shop. Really I only have a few favourites but it's so easy to fall in love and buy a new bag to update a look quite instantly. And now I've made room, I can possibly get some more!

There is nothing as good as real leather, although, vinyl bags are being made better and better, leather tends to age better and if you look after it, can last a life time. I'm not a fan of satchels, I personally find them really impractical and think they are better suited to school kids. Keep it simple, lots of pockets, zips to keep things inside.

I have come to like a smaller bag; enough to fit a purse, sunglasses, phone, lip balm, pens and a diary, it also encourages you to clean out all those bits of paper and things a little more too! I go for simple lines, neutral leather tones and ensure it's something you will like next season too. Here are a few of my favourites...

Weekend Tunes: PJ Harvey

If you haven't heard of PJ Harvey then, well, this will be quite the introduction. Polly Jean Harvey is from the UK and she is the only person to have won the Mercury Prize.... twice. She is an amazing songwriter, singer and musician. She can play and instrument at the same time as singing her own songs (pop fans, take note, this is what people had to do to make it in the music industry before all this manufactured crap came out). I love her and her style, as I have grown and changed in my life, she's been doing the same thing.

Here she is accepting her amazing prize and also one of my favourite tracks, A Place Called Home from her first Mercury Prize winning album, Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea.

Guest Post: Tornadoes and Tigers

I thought it would be good to get a guys perspective on the latest creation from the Frankie folks that we love and hold dear to our hearts, that is, Smith Journal. I sent Dane a copy of the magazine and this is what he has to say.....

Being an avid reader of my wife’s Frankie magazine I anticipated the release of Smith Journal by Frankie Press to fill the void in the men’s market. Although I was excited I was also nervous as to whether this would be the answer.

On receiving Smith Journal, off the bat this magazine felt like it had substance. The cover stock was sturdy and masculine, you couldn’t help wanting to have a backwards flick through. At a glance it was refreshing to not see page after page of skinny models wearing uncultured garments. The small men’s fashion feature was humble and relatable, down side is now I actually want each piece regardless of price.

The writers have done their research into what the modern male really wants to read. It’s hard to get most men to sit down and read anything, I would know. However I found myself enthralled in each an every article as if it was drawn from the pool of man. The essence of each article empowers and inspires, with a touch of creativity and wit thrown in. I enjoyed reading ‘chew the fat’, ‘a rogues’ gallery’ and even became educated in the history of chess and the tortuous Rubik’s cube.

I think what makes Smith Journal so relatable is that it reads in the refined way Frankie does, with added testosterone.

Being a design major I enjoy the use of space within the layout, allowing us time to breath before we read on. It shows that Smith is the genuine thing and every little detail has been run through by a fine-toothed comb.

As for Smith Journal claiming to be reader friendly for the female market, I must put up a five high. My wife was actually laughing out loud at The Information: A short collection of random essays. There is truly a little something for everyone.

Smith Journal hides no surprises; it bared itself to discerning gentlemen with genuine stories, honest features, boyish wit and inspiration. Unlike other generic men’s magazine, Smith won’t let you down.

Isaac Hayes is such a legend, a soul singer from Tennesse in the US. He has produced some very memorable tracks, but you may know him best as the voice of 'Chef' from Southpark. Isaac Hayes died in 2008 at the age of 65. This song, Walk On By is a cover, and boy does he own it! I like to bake when I listen to his music, weird, I know.

I have 3 amazing new Designers that have been added to the store this week, all for you! Proving to already be really popular already (and of course, this is Foxes, what else do you expect!), you'll have to jump to the site and take a look-see...

Firstly we have Sensitive Boyfriend, Drus is a fine gentleman that makes his products with a little bit of wickedness, a slight sideways smile and always with a few tears. Based in Auckland the first things for Foxes are a series of school inspired badges.

Next, Dubbleyou made by Sara, an independent Graphic Designer based in Australia. She creates witty and simple tea towels with well designed images and in fun colours too — I love her Snoop Dogg inspired teatowel! I am obsessed with crystals, I love them. Since I was little, my Mother has always had them in the house, she taught me that each one has a different meaning and you wear it for a different purpose or place in your house in a certain space to change the energy you give or receive — and even if you aren't into all that mumbo jumbo, they're super pretty to look at.

I love raw crystals; but not too scruffy looking (or so that they damage your clothes!) refined jewellery made with precious metals such as gold, but semi-precious stones in their natural shapes and formations or some are mounted into used bullet casings (like this one from Hunter Gatherer). Clever New Zealanders are always the best. Meet Janine And The Mixtape, a group of talented folks, fronted by a lovely lass from Auckland, NZ, Janine who make good beats laced with really strong vocals. They recently visited New York (where the below video was shot, she can sing like that live. I'm impressed) after winning the Juice TV and Auckland Uni's songwriter of the year award. Go have a look-see at the website, it has links to their Soundcloud should your ears crave a little bit more. And they will.

This track is called You and it's been on repeat in my office all day, getting stuck in my head in a really good kind of way.

Jessica's Style: Soft Geometry

It's no secret that I love triangles, facets and geometry inspired textiles, jewellery and homewares. It makes me super happy. I've been saving up these items on an imaginary (although, sort of real) wishlist that will one day materialise in my home.

Black and white with pops of colour are my favourite. The trick I think is to not over do it; have a bed spread with single coloured pillows and throws, have a few cushions scattered on a plain couch. It creates more of a focus and doesn't make your eyes go mental with too much pattern.

Choose your favourite colours; they can match or they can clash. There aren't too many rules about it, just make it your own.

How AMAZING is the backing track on this tune!! Too good. So smooth, so cool. Why? I hear you ask, because Pete Rock had his finger in the pie and worked on the production of a lot of the album. That man is a genius. The result is a really, really great track that is definitely hip-hop at it's finest. From what I can gather Rob-O only released one album back in 2006 called Rhyme Pro, I wonder what he's up to now..? This track is called Wanderlust.

I love scarves, I'm not a huge fan of silk scarves (I love to look at them and buy them but hardly ever wear them) only because it feels a bit weird having something cool and slippery around your neck. I love cosy, wooly, soft not scratchy scarves. You can instantly update your favourite jacket to match the seasons colours with a scarf, or stick with a favourite that your Nana might have made you.

Personally, I buy a jacket that I know will be a timeless staple then mess around with accessories like hat, scarves and gloves to change it up.

Chunky knits always look the best, neutral colours with tassels or pom poms for a little added awesomeness. Scarves are super easy to make too! You can knit or crochet a scarf in just one type of stitch — so get to You Tube and search for some tutes if you're game!

We Can Create: Final Announcement

Due to a few changes the final announcement of vendors was delayed slightly, so apologies to all those on tender-hooks waiting!

We Can Create is happening on Friday 26th of August & Saturday 27th August at the Aotea Centre in Auckland CBD. You can still get tickets for the two day creative extravaganza! SO hop to it if you don't want to miss out.

The market will be happening on the Saturday 27th of August from 12pm to 6pm in the foyer to the centre, and the market IS open to the public if you would like to come and say hullo.

I recently discovered this tune and it has been on repeat in my office the last few weeks! Quite different for me, but similar to Gold Panda that I had on the blog a few months ago. When I first heard it I had to pull over on a busy road so I could write it down and it took me ages to get let back in to the traffic and I was rather late to where I was going; honestly, the things I do for the blog. This is a tracked called Sleepless and it has been remixed by another recent discovery, Flume.

Who can resist a gentleman. I love this recent trend of men dressing, well, like men really. Finishing an outfit with a bow tie, a waist coat and a blazer looks great! More guys should do it, and if you are one of those men that already dress this way; I would curtsey when I meet you.

Weekend Tunes: Blood Orange

I heard this on the radio the other day and just loved it. Maybe it was because I was driving first thing in the morning to walk Ollie along the beach and it just suited the mood? Either way, very cool. They have an 80's vibe about them that I like. This track is called Sutphin Boulevard by a band called Blood Orange, from what I can gather they come from the US and are based in Brooklyn, New York and LA. They have a blog too!

I'm a sucker for Neon; anything bright, a pop of colour on a neutral outfit is just a bit of fun. You don't have to go crazy, neon and brights can look sophisticated without looking as through you have gone back in time to the 90's and are at a rave.... If you don't want to get a bright pink or yellow dress, you could pair bright tights with a black dress and boots or a neon pair of studs like the one below from A Merry Mishap. I like to see Neon with neutrals and nude tones, quite contradictory but they compliment so well.

Welcome to a series of new posts for the blog! I've been putting together these posts for a while now, what started as an off the cuff suggestion with friends over a wine (like how all the good things are discussed, really!) I couldn't shake the idea. It flows on from my previous post about Pinterest, I wanted to combine some of my favourite pins, finds and even bloggers (watch out for my guests!) and show you how I would style things from the store, or just things that I like and well, are Jessica's Style!

Foxes is all about being hand picked, curated and at the end of the day, what I like so it all makes sense really. It's not a lecture about style and what you should/shouldn't do but more about giving you ideas and perhaps inspiring you to try something new with what you wear or your home.

Stripes
I love stripes, I own many striped shirts, dresses, socks and accessories that are all striped. They are classic and super stylish. When I wear stripes, it's either a tucked in long sleeve shirt or large, wide block stripes for something a bit bolder.

Weekend Tunes: Amy Winehouse

I know that there have been a lot of tragedies lately (Norway, my heart is breaking for you and Somalia in famine after having 2 years of no rain) but another tragedy; Amy Winehouse passed away last week. Only 27. Having just turned 28 myself recently, this just feels like such a waste of a life that could have given so, so much. Her substance abuse was salivated over by the media (something that I think is in such bad taste and which they are also doing in her death) and I think that media spotlight didn't do her any favours with trying to get better. It is hard enough to tackle addiction in the privacy of your family and friends, let alone with most of the world watching and waiting for you to fail.

This is one of my favourite tracks from her, In My Bed; and what a fox she is in this video too! How I'll be remembering her anyway.

RIP Amy, the music you made really was awesome.

We All Need a Sensitive Boyfriend

Have you met Drus Dryden? He is the clever chap behind design label Sensitive Boyfriend, based in Auckland. I was lucky enough to meet him when he was at the very first Auckland Art & Craft Fair back in July 2010.

Anyway, I entered a competition over at Fancy Design Blog which I did not win BUT Drus thought I deserved a special badge anyway. I am now proudly sporting this Art Monitor badge, fitting really!

Weekend Tunes: Coldcut Feat. Roots Manuva

Roots Manuva really define a certain time in my life, it's funny how music does that, not all of it, but you can really attach memories to music which sometimes is really awesome and makes you feel 15 again; but on the other hand it can be terrible and remind you of a broken heart (much like being 15 again, really!).

Coldcut have been making tunes together since the mid-80's so you know that what they make is going to be rather tight. I think this track works really well, especially with the distinctive voice of Rodney Smith in your ears.

As you may already know, We Can Create is happening on the 26th and 27th of August at the Aotea Centre and Foxes is working with them in collaboration to create an exciting indie-design market of amazing vendors. Some fantastic Foxes makers will be involved and we thought it would be a great chance to open up the few remaining spaces for new makers to apply and hopefully see some new and awesome things happen.

How much do I LOVE Dusty? Bags full. If Son Of A Preacher Man is playing, I will sing along no matter where it is; it's always my karaoke song of choice (which I don't know if I should actually share that!). This track, Spooky is just too cool and is also one of my favourites, it's a cover but it's the best version of the song that originally started it's life as an instrumental. It's been used in so many movies I've lost count. I love her outfit in this video too.

July: Birthday Month!

Now, I know I just had my own birthday (woo hoo!), but July is Foxes birthday month! The little cub will be turning one year old later this month. It's not only a huge landmark for the store, but a massive one for me personally.

A whole year ago I had the courage to launch something that I felt really passionate about and that I really wanted to do. I did no market research (silly, really) aside from asking a few people that I knew what they thought of the whole thing, but I knew exactly what was missing and what I wanted, which I think is half the struggle when setting up a business of any kind.

It's been so wonderful to have the support from so many people and to find so many people that actually 'get' what I do. To say thanks for all the support I'll be doing some nifty surprises in the store for the month of July.... first one to be announced next week!

Foxes ♥ We Can Create

I have been sitting on this gem of new for AGES! Well, since the beginning of May this year anyway. We Can Create is happening on the 26th-27th of August this year at the Aotea Centre and I was lucky enough to be asked to collaborate with them and curate their first Indie-Design market.

So, what is this fantastic occasion? We Can Create is brought to us by The Church and features both up-and-coming talent and seasoned professionals over two days of seminars surrounded by satellite events and exhibitions. It's an annual celebration of all things art and design; graphics, fashion, animation, illustration, motion graphics, typography, sound design, live audio-visual art, interactive and experiential marketing, fine art, music, product design and more. Sounds pretty frikkin awesome to me!

The market will be a first; showcasing hand selected, independent designers with the first of these lucky scoundrels being...

Thank you SO much to everyone that made it along to the third Auckland Art & Craft Fair! It was an amazing day with over 5,500 people through the doors, everywhere I looked people were carrying around shopping bags with smiles on their faces — definitely a huge success!

As per usual, Foxes had a table there full to the brim with treats, so much sold out by the end of the day (don't worry, more stock is coming!) it was also great to meet so many customers that frequently buy online too.

Julien is such a talented dude; I bought his album at the start of last Summer along with two other New Zealand artists (who shall be featured in good time) and they were pretty much kept on repeat the whole Summer — and loud too, perfect for hanging at home. I love the percussion in this track, it also features Mara TK from Wellington based Electric Wire Hustle (SUCH an awesome band), he has got to have the smoothest voice in our fair country. This track is called Layer, but go and get the whole album, totally worth every cent and you get to ogle at the awesome cover art too.

I love, love, love Erykah Badu, she is an amazing woman. I still can't believe that this Track, On & On was recorded in 1997, in saying that though, most of the music I listen to regularly is from the 90's (is that cool yet?? Auckland Art & Craft Fair: This Weekend

The Auckland Art & Craft Fair is happening for the 3rd time this weekend! It's also marks the first birthday of our Fair since our debut in July last year. As you may (or may not) know, I co-organise this event with my good friend Kylie. We wanted to create a Fair that wasn't a market, something that was a bit different to the monthly markets happening about the place, but to compliment them rather than compete. So far, we like to think that we have done a pretty good job at that!

The Fair is pretty special; we have amazing talent from all over New Zealand coming for the day and even a few from Australia! Everyone there is hand selected and chosen for the quality of their work and because their work is special, something we feel people would love to own.

Naturally, Foxes is a proud sponsor of this event and I will be there on the day not only running the show, but with a table laden with Foxes goodies! I'll also have new clothing from Flox, Misty Lang, T-Shirtopedia, Cellar Door Clothing and Miss Ellie May if you fancy coming and trying something on.

I love geometric designs, and what I love more is to able to wear them every day! These gorgeous earrings and necklaces have just arrived, fresh from the postie from A Merry Mishap.

Jenn is a designer based in the US and really, just loves polymer clay. Each piece has been hand cut and shaped, making each one special and slightly different to the previous work.
